how to clip a chicken’s wings

Urban chickens are very rewarding. They provide you with clean, high quality and nutritious eggs, which provide eggs shells and nutrients for the soil along with high quality chicken manure for fertiliser and they clean up all the scraps and plant off-cuts. They really are incredible workers that never fail to provide.

That being said, keeping urban chickens is not without its risks. Here in Cape Town, South Africa, we are allowed to have hens in urban areas, which exposes them to roads, getting lots and other dangers. Roads and cars probably pose the rgeatest risk to urban chickens if their wings are not clipped.

Clipping does not hurt the chicken and what it does is remove the tips of their flying feathers to remove their ability generate lift, which keeps them safely on the ground.
